China Family Visit Visa (Q1-Q2) Requirements
China Visa Application
Visa application is completed electronically: Chinese visa application online.
Have your digital photo without eyeglasses (sample click here) ready for upload before starting the visa application.
CHI, LA, NY, and SF jurisdiction applicant requires an additional $75 fee during checkout.
NOTE: We recommend completing the online visa application up to the "Review" stage (do not click the "Submit" button), and E-mail the your application ID to us for review (info@visahero.com) along with the following scans:
- Digital passport photo (sample click here)
- Passport bio-data page
- Driver's license or utility bill
- Most recent China visa—if any
- Q and S visa types: letter of invitation along with a copy of host's passport/ID
Invitation Letter From Family/Relative Who Is a Chinese Citizen/Resident
Q1 visa is for those who are planning to stay more than 180 days in China.
Q2 visa is for those who are planning to stay less than 180 days in China.
Please provide an invitation letter from a Chinese citizen/resident explaining your duration of stay in China, including:
- Chinese citizen: front and back copy of National ID
- Chinese resident: copy of passport bio-data page, along with Chinese Residence Permit
Proof of Residence/Address
One of the following documents must match with the residence address on your visa application (PO BOX not accepted):
- Front and back copy of your driver's license,
- A copy of utility bill: electric, gas, or water.
For minor applicants (under 18), proof of residence for both parents must be provided.
Original Passport
Your physical passport must maintain validity for a minimum of 6-months beyond your departure date.
A second valid, including a temporary passport, is not eligible for a China visa application.
Please note that the amendment pages located at the back of your passport are not visa pages and are not acceptable for visa issuance.
If you've run out of visa pages, please renew your passport before applying for a China visa.
Where You Stay Form
Previous China Visa
If you received a Chinese visa before, please include a photocopy of that visa along with a copy of the passport's bio-data page where it is located.
If you have misplaced the passport that contained your previous visa, you must provide a signed letter of explanation, detailing the reasons for your inability to provide it
(click here for sample).
Important to note: you can re-apply for a new Chinese visa if your current visa is expiring within a year, UNLESS you're applying for a different type of visa. If your current Chinese visa has over 1 year of validity in your previous passport, you can travel with both passports to China
Born in China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan?
Please note that if the following requirements cannot be provided, your visa request could take months. Moreover, Consular might require an in-person meeting.
If you were born in Mainland China, please provide:
- Your name in Chinese characters on Section 1.1D of the visa application.
- A copy of your proof of name change (if applicable).
- If you've received a Chinese visa: copy of most recent visa and passport it was issued in.
- If you have never been granted a Chinese visa, provide the last Chinese passport you were issued and a copy of your U.S. naturalization certificate.
If you were born in mainland China and adopted by American parent(s), you must provide the following additional documents:
- Notarized Adoption Letter from Court and/or any additional documents from Chinese and American Courts related to the adoption.
- Your original Chinese Passport.
- A copy of your birth certificate.
- Applicants under 18: Provide copies of BOTH parents' Driver's License and U.S. Passport bio-data page.
If you were born in Hong Kong or Taiwan, you must provide the following:
- Your name in Chinese characters on Section 1.1D of the visa application.
- A copy of your proof of name change (if applicable).
- If you've received a Chinese visa: copy of most recent visa and passport it was issued in.
- Copy of your last Hong Kong SAR or Republic of China passport data page - if you are no longer in possession of your last passport, a copy of your birth certificate must be provided.
Minor Applicant (Under 18)
Applicants who are below the age of 18 are required to provide the following:
- Copy of birth certificate.
- Copy of both parents' passport bio-data page.
- Copy of both parents' driver's license/ID.
- Copy of adoption papers (if applicable).
- Non-US parents: copy of their valid US status.
- Either parent signs the "Confirmation of Online Application".
- Either parent signs section 9.1A of the application.
- Either parent signs section 9.2E on behalf of the minor.
If one parent has full custody, please provide one of the following:
- A copy of full custody court document, or
- Death certificate of deceased parent
If one or both parents are Chinese citizen(s) without U.S. permanent resident card, or permanent residency was obtained after the child was born, VisaHero cannot assist you. In this case, both parents and the applicant must apply in person for a Chinese Travel Document (not visa), even if the minor holds a U.S. passport.
Multiple Citizenships
Please submit a copy of the passport info page of your other nationality.
Special Requirement: . GOV, .ORG, NGO, Journalist, Social Media
If your profession is in any of the following fields: social media, religious organizations, news/journalism, NGOs, or if your employer's website uses a .gov and .org domain, it is necessary to provide a signed letter that outlines your job responsibilities (click here for sample).
Note: In rare cases, visa processing may be delayed, and a personal interview might be required.
Special Requirement: Military Service History
Applicants who have a military service background should submit a copy of their military discharge documentation and/or a signed personal statement.
This statement should confirm their country and branch of service, date(s) of service, rank, occupation or specialty, location(s) of service, and any other relevant information

Proof of U.S. Status
Non-U.S. applicants are required to submit a photocopy of their Permanent Resident Card (front and back), a valid U.S. visa, I-94, or I-20.
